Luxury Homes and Lifestyle in Yarmouth, ME:
A Heritage of seaside beauty and excellence

A sweetheart community just 12 miles north of Portland, the seaside community of Yarmouth provides a whole package of natural beauty, friendly energy, and old-world charm.

Education fueled by community

Yarmouth’s public school system, recently ranked the best in Maine by U.S. News and World Report, benefits from highly-involved teachers and parents who provide a supportive and enthusiastic learning atmosphere. Yarmouth is also home to the renowned North Yarmouth Academy, a private institution catering to students all the way from preschool through grade 12.

It’s the little things…

If you ask a resident why they enjoy Yarmouth living, don’t be surprised if they say “sidewalks.” In most communities, cyclists, joggers, kids and pets share the road with vehicles; but here, wide sidewalks throughout most of the town allows safe passage for pedestrians. They might also mention the Clam Festival, an idyllic summer tradition that draws people from all over for a parade, fireworks, rides, food, and the work of local artisans.

Idyllic village is the heart of town

Yarmouth’s charismatic Main Street village is picturesque in the traditional New England way with large trees, restored captain’s homes, white chapels, and the stately brick buildings of North Yarmouth Academy. There is a local bookstore, community music center, pottery shop, smoothie cafe and the newly remodeled Handy Andy’s market, where locals gather for coffee, Otto pizza, Holy Donuts and other convenient sundries.

Conveniences close at hand

Just a few miles from the shopping mecca of Freeport and a quick drive from the village, Yarmouth’s stretch of U.S. Rte. 1 offers conveniences including gas stations, a hardware store, and a large Hannaford grocery store. Rather dine out? Yarmouth is home to no less than thirteen sit-down restaurants including the marina-side Royal River Grillhouse, the convenient Grill 233, and farm-to-table favorite Gather, which features live-music brunches.

Being outdoors is part of life

Yarmouth has several green spaces for residents to enjoy all year long. Royal River Park, tucked behind the K-1 Rowe School, is a beautiful destination for walking the dog or reading in the sun. On North Road, a huge playground alongside green ball fields becomes a hub of community in spring and summer. And on Cousins Island, miles of well-maintained trails are popular with mountain bikers, walkers, and trail runners alike.

Yarmouth, ME real estate: Village homes to equine estates, and everything in between

The streets that branch off of Main Street offer the ease of walking to shops, schools, and many more conveniences. West Elm Street, which runs perpendicular to Main, is lined with the best of Maine real estate: grand single-family homes with historic period details and lush green yards. Residents in this pocket of town often have festive viewing parties for the Clam Festival parade, which passes right by. The neighborhoods off West Elm are rich in mid-century charm and colonial style. Venture out a bit further and you’ll find farmhouses on large, serene parcels of land.

Island escape

Living on Cousins Island allows the aura of a full escape and the comfort of a bridge connecting back to the mainland. Cousins Island’s bridge was built in the 1950s, so there is a blend of quaint “pre-bridge” Victorian cottages with “post-bridge” ranches along the main road. Recently, some of the mid-century homes have been replaced by larger coastal cottages. Accessed from quiet side roads, the oceanfront homes enjoy sweeping views of Casco Bay and beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Moorings at Madeline Point are available through the town, and two tidal beaches with public parking are popular for shell-hunting, picnicking, and watching the stars come out.

Littlejohn Island, accessed from Cousins by yet another bridge, offers additional privacy to its roughly 120 residents. Littlejohn Nature Preserve, with its Oceanside trail and protected land, is a backyard gem with nesting spaces for bald eagles and great horned owls.

Make your move

For all of these reasons and more, Yarmouth has become one of Greater Portland’s “it” places to live. Yarmouth, ME homes for sale don’t tend to stay on the market for long; so when you find one you love, be prepared to pounce.
