Luxury Homes and Lifestyle in Freeport, Maine: Surrounded by the sea, shopping options, and serenity

To most, Freeport is synonymous with shopping. Yet beyond the impressive commercial district is a tight-knit community that relishes their close proximity to beaches, trails and moorings as well their quick 20-minute commute to Portland.

More than L.L. Bean

Of course, the iconic outdoor recreational retail giant helped boost Freeport’s fame and attract other national brands to the area, but there is a proud vein of local flavor that keeps the downtown charming. Speckled amongst the outlets, there are two grocery stores, a movie theater, yoga studio, pet supply store, and numerous restaurants to keep every palette sated. L.L. Bean is generous to the community, hosting a free summer concert series, a pumpkin festival, and the Sparkle Celebration for the holidays; and donated the prime piece of Maine real estate that is now Gorman Park, a favorite setting for dog walking, picnics and ice skating.

Park yourself here

Freeport is blessed with ample space dedicated to land and wildlife conservation. Wolfe’s Neck Farm is set on four miles of shoreline with woods and rolling farmlands. Throughout the year, it hosts harvest festivals, farm-to-table dinners, educational programs with the animals, and unparalleled camping.

Winslow Park also springs alive in the summer for oceanside camping, hiking and family-friendly beach going. On Thursday nights, there are free concerts where all ages, pooches in tow, gather to picnic and dance as the sun sets over the Atlantic. In addition to those found at the parks, several other Freeport trail systems are open year round for cross-country skiing, trail running and even horseback riding.

Community is key

The community takes pride in looking out for each other’s best interests. Through the community center, annual fundraisers help families pay for oil in the winter and send local kids to camp for the summer. The sun-filled public library is a gathering spot for story time, art exhibits and workshops. And the Casco Bay YMCA offers swimming classes, youth sports and free childcare while parents get their workouts in the fitness center.

My other car is a boat

With three marinas, a yacht club and two public boat launches, Freeport is a boating haven. Cruise around Casco Bay, dock at Great Diamond Island for a gourmet dinner, or sail up the coast to Boothbay, Rockland and beyond – it’s all possible from here. The Harraseeket River is a beautiful destination for kayakers, canoers and stand-up paddleboarders alike. The tidal river was central to Freeport’s ship building history; the great masts used on the Royal Navy ships were floated down the Harraseeket for delivery to England. The Harraseeket Yacht Club offers youth sailing and race programs open to non-members.

Freeport, ME real estate

In Freeport, you can feel like you are miles away from civilization, but in actuality, are very close to shopping, restaurants and the train station. Along the ocean are elegant Maine shingle-style cottages and renovated Victorian homes showcasing spectacular views of Casco Bay or the Harraseeket River. Many neighborhoods have association docks and moorings for owner’s boats. Presently, there are several increasingly hard-to-find waterfront lots available; your dream home is waiting to be built.

Moving inland, you’ll find sprawling parcels of land with stoic farmhouses, stables and fertile gardens; and South Freeport is a unique hamlet all its own. A quaint village center harbors a general store and post office with the convenience of Freeport’s amenities only a few miles away. Brewer’s Marina is a local gathering place for a post-sail beer, while lobster boats and pleasure crafts bob beneath the golden sun. The now vacant, but still breathtaking Casco Castle, a former grand hotel built in 1903, is always a conversation starter. Back in those merry times, a week’s stay was $12.00 and a lobster and steak dinner a mere fifty cents.

And while, like the local fare, Freeport Maine homes for sale go for a little more these days, residents will tell you the experience of living here is worth every penny.
