Luxury Homes and Lifestyle in Rockport, ME: a luxurious coastal retreat with an artistic twist

Rockport is one of those special coastal communities that is as charming when blanketed with a frosting of flurries as it is under the dazzling summer sun. The mid-point between Kennebunkport and Bar Harbor, this snug town thrives with galleries, restaurants, health food stores and boutiques and attracts artists, builders, sailors and engineers alike.

A history of ship and stone

Heralded as one of “America’s Prettiest Towns” by Forbes magazine, several movies have been filmed against the idyllic backdrop here. And during the summer, the harbor is home to many Maine Windjammers, some of which are registered as National Historic Landmarks. These stunning tall-ships are available for cruises up the coastline for an unforgettable experience.

But this town’s true sails are filled by more than what meets the eye: Rockport’s hard-working roots run deep, and span from a rich boatbuilding legacy to a lesser-known lime harvesting history. In fact, the town supplied most of the limestone to repair the U.S. Capitol Building after it was damaged in the War of 1812.

A true artist’s haven

Since its inception, Rockport has drawn and inspired writers, painters, singers and artisans to visit and settle, with the artistic vibe playing an important role in the social scene here. The Rockport Opera House is considered the anchor of the community, offering locals and visitors a full year-round schedule of world class performances, workshops and social gatherings.

Rockport is also home to the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship and the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, which has been supporting artists with Maine ties for over 60 years. CMCA recently moved into a new building in the heart of the town and will now able to offer space for more artists, classes and events.

A local legend

One of the most famed year-round residents of Rockport was not a person. Andre the Seal became the most popular attraction after the Goodrich family adopted the motherless pup in 1961. Annually for 25 years, to the delight of his massive fan base, Andre would return to the harbor and perform tricks. Andre passed away in 1986, but is memorialized today by his very own piece of Maine real estate: a statue in the Rockport Marine Park.
