Luxury Homes and Lifestyle in Camden, ME: a summer getaway, and so much more

Camden, Maine was the preferred summer retreat of wealthy East Coast families in the late 1800s, and there’s little doubt as to why. An idyllic seaside village that looks like a living postcard, Camden calls to your inner sailor, artist, gardener, entertainer and poet.

Historic Camden, ME real estate is elegant and refined. Sprawling estates overlook the ocean, recalling a time when America’s most noble families would gather for lawn parties and business deals. Originally designed for the fleeting summer excursion, these homes now cater beautifully to year-round life.

Sun-kissed summer days

In summertime, Camden’s population triples with suntanned families in search of the biggest lobster and snowbirds reconnecting waterside. Camden Harbor springs to life, the navy water dotted with bright white sails, windjammers, working fishing boats and impressive yachts. The boutiques, restaurants, and galleries downtown, framed in 19th-century brick architecture, bustle with laid-back spirit.

World-class boating in your backyard

Serene Penobscot Bay is a haven for casual day cruisers and kayakers. Propelled by the winds of adventure? Skirt past Curtis Island to find the open and wild Atlantic Ocean.

Looking up from the water, you’ll find spacious Federal-style homesstanding with the same sturdy resolve as their original dwellers: sea captains who took up permanent port here after the War of 1812.

Each August, coastal Maine real estate connoisseurs get to peek inside a select few on the Merryspring kitchen tour.

Crisp air, cozy moments

As the days shorten, life slows down in Camden, but it hardly stops. Deep into the fall, a hike up Mt. Battierewards with the striking view of leaves blazing with color along Mugunticook Lake.

And when the lakes freeze and flurries scurry around the sidewalks, there are magical moments to be had. Moments when you’re happy to be snowed in so you can finally finish reading (or writing) your novel, or chatting fireside over a bottle from the nearby Cellardoor Winery. And moments when, as you snowshoe through silent trails, the crisp air reinvigorates your soul.

Nowhere to go but down

At the Camden Snow Bowl, a community-owned ski area, family-friendly trails put the joy back into skiing – and tobogganing, too. Its U.S. Annual Toboggan Championship, a 20+ year tradition, isone of New England’s premier February events. Teams from all over attend, donning whimsical costumes to race down the Snow Bowl’s 400-foot iced track. The track is also open to the public during the season (costumes optional).

A living Hollywood set

Through all seasons, Camden’s social scene alights with culture, the main draw being the exquisitely restored Camden Opera House. Built after the Great Fire of 1892, this grand Victorian 500-seat theater attracts talent from around the globe. Camden’s “Hollywood set” beauty has long been a draw forperformers and artistsas well. Edna St. Vincent Millay wrote her poem, Renascence, from the top of Mt. Battie, and 1957’s Peyton Place is one of several movies filmed in the town.

Eyes on the horizon

Camden steps into the future each fall with the annual PopTech conference, where 600 of the brightest innovators in science, design, corporate leadership and the humanities gather in an effort to create positive changes in the world.

Just far enough removed

Should you desire a dose of urban energy any time of the year, Portland is less than two hours away and Montreal about five. Also within close reach are Bar Harbor, Sugarloaf ski resort and dozens of villages sure to become part of your new routine.
